Highway fees and tariffs

As highways in Slovakia are not free of charge, you need to purchase a highway vignette and place it on the windscreen before entering a highway. There are annual, monthly, weekly or daily highway vignettes available in Slovakia. Daily vignette is only available for vehicles up to 3.5tons. The weights always include the trailer and semitrailer. The highway vignettes can be purchased at any gas station and at some post offices. You just need to know the weight of your vehicle and the time period. If you are planning to use D1, D2 or the R1 from Nitra to Trnava you certainly need to purchase a highway vignette. There are regular highway vignette checks in Slovakia. In case you are stopped by the police you will have to pay a fine.

Highway fees and tariffs in Austria

It is obligatory to use a highway vignette on every motorway and highway for cars and motorcycles in Austria. Austrian highway vignettes are available also on Slovak gas stations. There are a 10-day, 2- month and an annual highway vignettes. Vehicles above 3.5 tons pay on a pay-per-kilometre basis according to the number of axles.

In Czech Republic, vehicles above 12 tons pay on pay-per-kilometre basis according to the number of axles 12 tons.
